If you haven’t left your house yet this week (or in the last month), let us just tell you…It. Is. HOT! In fact, Georgia and the east coast are experiencing a heat wave this week, with temperatures in the upper 90s and the heat index well into triple digits. No one wants to be cooped up indoors though, we need that Vitamin D and fresh air! So as you’re heading out, be sure to focus on these 4 tips to keep safe in the heat.
- Dress for the weather: Did you know darker colors soak up more of the sun’s rays? When you’re walking outside, it’s best to wear something lighter colored and made of lighter fabric that will wick moisture from your body. And of course, don’t forget to add a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen to project yourself from the hot Georgia sun.
- Drink plenty of water: This is an important one to think about every day, but particularly when you’re planning to spend time out in the heat. And if you’re going for a longer hike or run, bringing a sports drink along is good to replenish other things that your body expels in sweat, like electrolytes.
- Watch the clock: If you’re used to taking your trail walks in the middle of the afternoon, you may want to adjust your schedule for the week (or summer). The heat of the day is from 3-6pm, with the coolest temperatures (unfortunately) being right before sunrise.
- Pay attention to your body: It’s easy to get distracted when you’re walking the trails. Maybe you’re catching up with a friend or neighbor, or your eyes are drawn in awe to the beauty surrounding you. With this heat though, it’s important to be mindful of how your body feels and whether you are becoming overheated.
And don’t forget to check on kids and pets!
